Description
A Seal artwork from the Wild Minder Selkie Collection, inspired by the Selkie stories found in Irish and Scottish folklore.
This piece is hand-painted and free-motion embroidered before being transformed into a printed card, turning a simple greeting card into a small piece of symbolic art inspired by the sea and its folklore.
The artwork represents the themes found in the Selkie story – transformation, freedom, and returning to one’s true nature.
Perfect as a greeting card, small art print, or a symbolic gift for someone drawn to the sea and its stories.
The Selkie Story
A seal swims in the moonlight.
Coming ashore, they shed their seal skin and shapeshift into human form, leaving their skin hidden among the rocks.
In many old tales, a man discovers the skin and steals it, binding the Selkie to him in wedlock. Years pass on land, the sea always calling to them – shells, salt air, and the tide constant reminders of the life they once had.
But Selkies never forget their true nature.
One day, through chance, help, or quiet searching, the lost skin is found again. When the Selkie finally puts it on, their true self returns.
The Selkie slips back into the sea – free once more.
