Bluebell – “Malicious Fairy Magic”
For a few short weeks each year you can step into a woodland and find a sea of blue — an absolutely stunning sight. But in folklore, all may not be quite what it seems.
Across European folklore there are many tales about the strange magic said to live in bluebell woods. In Scottish folklore they were sometimes known as “Dead Men’s Bells,” a warning that wandering too freely through bluebells could invite trouble.
Hearing a mysterious ringing among the flowers was said to be even worse – a sign you may have caught the attention of a malicious fairy.
And if you ever find a ring of bluebells, folklore warns you not to step inside. Such rings were believed to be fairy traps, places where humans could become lost to the fairy world and never quite find their way back again.
