Selkie “Padlock” Talisman
A small Selkie Talisman from the Wild Minder Selkie Collection, inspired by the Selkie stories found in Irish and Scottish folklore.
Each piece is hand-painted and finished with free-motion embroidery, transforming a simple patch or bag charm into a small symbolic talisman inspired by the stories of the sea.
The Padlock Talisman represents the feeling of being trapped in a life that is not true to who you are — a symbol of being bound to a life on land, unable to return to your true nature.
Designed as either an iron-on patch or bag charm, this tiny artwork carries echoes of the folklore and stories people have shared with the sea for centuries. The padlock is entwined with seaweed and barnacles, bringing together the imagery of the sea with the story of the Selkie’s stolen skin and the life she is bound to.
The Selkie Story
In old tales, a Selkie sheds their seal skin to take human form, hiding it among the rocks. But when their skin is stolen, they are trapped on land, unable to return to the sea.
In some tales, the Selkie is forced into marriage, bound to a life they did not choose while their true nature remains hidden from the world. The sea continues to call, but the Selkie is locked away from the life they once knew.
Eventually, the lost skin is found. The Selkie slips it on, returns to their true nature, and disappears back into the sea — free once more.
