You might have seen the word talisman around Wild Minder and wondered what it actually means.
So, what is a talisman?
A talisman is an object that carries a particular meaning, symbolism or intention. People have been making and carrying talismans for centuries, often as objects connected to protection, luck, love, courage, change or other things that matter to them.
They can take all sorts of forms. A piece of jewellery, a stone, a symbol, a little carved object – even something you’ve found yourself and decided has meaning.
And I think that’s what makes them interesting.
More than a lucky charm
Talismans are often described as lucky charms, but I think they’re a little more personal than that.
A talisman doesn’t necessarily have to do anything.
It can simply be something that reminds you of something.
Maybe you carry a talisman for courage because you’re going through a period of change. Maybe you choose one that represents freedom because that’s something you’re craving. Or perhaps you simply connect with the animal, plant or symbol on it.
The meaning doesn’t have to be the same for everyone.
In fact, I quite like the idea that you can decide what it means to you.
Why nature?
Nature has always been full of symbols and stories.
Plants, animals, seasons, the moon, the sea and even things we might normally overlook have all been given meanings and associations over time.
A butterfly might make you think of transformation.
A shell might remind you of the sea or of home.
A mushroom might represent the hidden, interconnected world beneath our feet.
A fern leaf might make you think about potential and new beginnings.
There isn’t necessarily one correct meaning. Different cultures, traditions and people have interpreted these things in different ways throughout history.
That’s part of what I find fascinating.
Wild Minder Talismans
This is where my talismans come in.
I wanted to make small, wearable pieces of art inspired by the things I notice in nature, folklore and the changing seasons.
Each one is handmade from natural fabrics, painted with fabric paints and then embroidered with free motion embroidery.
Each Wild Minder talisman comes with its own little oracle-style card, which gives you a starting point for the symbolism behind the design.
You might choose one because you love its meaning.
You might choose one because you need that particular reminder right now.
Or you might just look at it and think, I really like that one.
All of those are good reasons.
So, what does your talisman mean?
I think that’s the nicest thing about them.
The symbolism might give you a starting point, but what it comes to represent in your own life is up to you.
It could be a reminder of courage, freedom, protection, change, connection or simply a part of the natural world that you love.
Whatever you choose, your talisman becomes part of your story.
